Originally from the South of France, Albert Coste studied both at the Music Conservatory and at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille, which he joined in 1909. He was shortlisted for the Prix de Rome in 1914 but the First World War interrupted the competition. Amputated by two fingers, he was forced to give up a career as a cellist and chose to devote himself fully to painting. He moved toParis in 1919 where he continued his training in Fernand Cormon's studio. The same year, he met Maurice Denis from whom hereceived precious advice at the Atelier d'art sacré. In 1941, he collaborated with the master in the decoration of the Sacred Heart ofCrete’s chapel in Thonon-les-Bains. 

A first personal exhibition was devoted to him in 1933 in Aix-en-Provence where he had settled ten years earlier (catalogue prefaced byMaurice Denis). He was appointed professor at the School of Fine Arts of the city in 1935. Among the commissions he received for thedecoration of public buildings in Aix-en-Provence, he designed the ambitious décor for the Law Faculty of the architect FernandPouillon in 1952.

Albert Coste first deals with various subjects in a spirit close to the Nabis, with a perfect technical mastery. Different periodspunctuated his work, which testifies to his permeability to various influences. In 1940, his meeting with the painter Albert Gleizes, agreat theorist and author of Cubism, with whom he became friends, will deeply mark his work. Albert Coste questioned his art andembarked on the path of abstraction with the support of Gleizes. Within coloured compositions (ill.1), he combines flat geometriccolours and evocative graphic elements.

The work on paper that we propose could be preparatory to a more accomplished abstract painting. The tangle of geometrical shapesdrawn by fine pencil hatching contributes to the dynamism of the composition.
