Artist sculptor and medallist, Pierre Bouret was born in Paris in 1897. A disciple of Charles Despiau, whom he met in 1923, he trained under the aegis of tutelary figures such as François Pompon and Aristide Maillol. He rubbed shoulders with them at the Valsuani Foundry where he worked as a retoucher in the 1930s. He later taught at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris and was a member of the committee of the Salon des Tuileries.
Pierre Bouret's work bears witness to the extraordinary quality of French figurative sculpture of the inter-war period. He essentially works in stone, whose carving he masters perfectly. He also uses other materials such as raw clay, terracotta, plaster, bronze and marble. Art critics of his time praised "his natural sense of stone and his understanding of it" (Barnett D. Colan, Continental Daily Mail, September 25, 1952).

Pierre Bouret worked in a variety of forms: medals, portraits, statuettes, important statues and bas-reliefs adorning the facades of various buildings. Benefiting from the support of the State, he was also entrusted with the creation of public monuments such as the Monument to Alexandre Dumas in Villers-Cotterêt.

The plaster bas-relief entitled La sieste que nous propose represents a woman asleep, curled up. We know of a 1971 terracotta replica of the same dimensions as well as sculptures in the round of 1964 (La Chatte, plaster; La Chatte, terracotta) where the model appears in an identical pose. The preparatory drawing is dated 1964. Pierre Bouret usually executes various variants of his sculpted figures within the same series.
