The present work, of excellent pictorial quality and excellently preserved, expresses a refined interpretation of the Italian-style landscape in vogue among Nordic artists of the Baroque age, approaching perfectly to the hand of the painter Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem (Haarlem 1620 - Amsterdam 1683).
It is a painting that expresses all the aesthetic quality and pictorial accuracy of the master, active in the middle of the seventeenth century, and belonging to that group of Flemish painters who decided to stay in Italy fascinated by the splendid panoramas and artistic wealth, to study and broaden your culture. He remained there for about a decade, from 1642 to 1653, drawing from the Roman countryside the themes of his landscapes, and specializing in pastoral views.
The Lazio region in its evocative views becomes the silent setting of scenes of everyday life, which the painter puts in the foreground, but without diverting attention from the grandiose spectacle offered by the landscape. It follows as the work presented here shows, perfect osmosis between the Arcadian emotions of Roman origin and the clear and airy atmosphere with the delicate chromatic and luminous harmony, typical features of the Nordic painting. Our composition shows us a cross-section of the rural life of the Roman countryside, with a group of figures, with women and children, intent on resting near a ford, while horses and cattle are watered.
