Pair of early 20th century watercolors representing flowers in vases placed on a table signed Arthur Charles Georges Chaplin, French painter born in Jouy-en-Josas on August 8, 1869, died in Paris 18th on May 10, 1935, son of painter Charles Chaplin. He obtained an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1903 and a 3rd class medal the following year2. Abandoning the vaporous negligees often represented by his father, Arthur Chaplin draws his inspiration from the more chaste beauties of botany. Pupil of Léon Bonnat then Bernier, his interest in the Dutch still life was confirmed during a trip to the Netherlands. He is a pasticher of the Dutch nature-mortists of the seventeenth century.
