"Protective Spirit - Abelam - Papua New Guinea"Beautiful representation of ancestor or protective spirit of the clan. This large male figure was probably kept in the house of initiations. It presents a male figure with slightly bent knees, the arms which go up on the torso.
Sex is visible and symbolizes procreation and lineage. A bird is stuck on top of the character's head.
Very nice stylization.
Wood, natural pigments. Slit at the base, broken and glued bird head
