"Octave Gallian (1855-1918)"
Very pretty and luminous oil on canvas by the Toulon painter Octave Gallian representing a seaside animated with characters in Tamaris in La Seyne sur Mer near Toulon. The work in good condition is signed lower right and measures nineteenth frame included 68 cm by 90 cm and 50 cm by 73 without the frame. Octave Gallian was born in Toulon, which he left to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at the Académie Julian with Jules Lefebvre, Gustave Boulanger and Charles Ginoux. He set up his workshop in the Faubourg Saint-Honoré where he practices the art of portraiture, especially feminine, but he often returns to the Provençal landscapes of his youth between Toulon and Martigues. He is a member of the Toulon workshop of fine arts. In 1887, he received the order for two decorative panels for the staircase of the Toulon art museum (Pêcheur provençal et Vanneuse) which were destroyed by bombing during the Second World War. The painters of his region, Eugène-Baptiste Emile Dauphin, Vincent Courdouan, Jean Pezous, François Nardi, Joseph Garibaldi, Julien Gustave Gagliardini, were his friends; He exhibited at the Salon of French artists between 1878 and 1905.
