"The Kidnapping Of Dejanire By The Centaur Nessus. Bronze Sculpture"
Superb bronze with black patina, on an ebony wooden base. XIXth model from Giambologna (Jean de Bologne, 1529-1608)

Height with base: 59 cm, bronze only: 45 cm

The theme of the centaur Nessus abducting Dejanira is taken from Greek mythology. Hercules and his wife must cross a river when Nessus offers to transport them, a ruse to kidnap Déjanire. Hercules will shoot him down with his arrows. While expiring, the centaur gives to Déjanire, jealous of a fickle husband, the means of retaining this one: by impregnating with his blood the skin of the lion of Némée which carries Hercules, she will be assured that it will be forever faithful to him . As soon as the tunic is over, it gnaws at Hercules' body which, to put an end to its suffering, throws itself into a blaze. After his death Juno forgives him, and accepts his apotheosis.
Many painters and sculptors have taken up this subject, among them the most famous Giambologna and Susini.
