"Luohan, XVIIIth China, Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period, Soapstone Statuette In Gray Green Celadon And Crimson Infused"
Luohan, object of scholar Considered as the first disciples of the Buddha, the luohan became sixteen and then eighteen in China. Allegories of men having reached wisdom, their effigies are among the objects adorning the studio of scholars.
China, Qing dynasty, Qianlong period (1735-1796). Luohan in gray-green nuanced soapstone infused with crimson
Height: 12 cm: Width: 8cm / Depth: 4.5 cm / Weight: 463 g
Despite its small size, this statuette of luohan is majestic, of a beautiful spiritual dimension both deep and serene and happy. The half-closed eyes under a large bulging forehead, fine beard and fine mustache above lips displaying a discreet smile give this luohan a very human appearance, marked with compassion.
Sitting, one leg raised, including his two hands, one resting on his knee, the other enclosing the rod he holds a branch loaded with longevity peaches. He wears a sumptuous draped garment with soft pleats bordered and enhanced with finely engraved floral and leafy patterns.
The engraved decoration of the garment, the delicacy of the lines representing the sage's hair indicate the hand of a master in the matter; it is certainly here the work of an artist renowned for the excellence of his soapstone sculpture.
The artist brilliantly shows the use of this easy-to-work stone and the wide chromatic range which allows him to give this living character to his productions.
Similar works in soapstone appear in many public collections, their appearances in sales, in particular in Hongkong, causing strong auctions. Zhou Bin, master in the subject, studied in Shoushanshi zhi [Annals of Shoushan soapstone], by Fang Zonggui in 1982, founded a school of sculpture, also in Fujian; among his disciples are Pan Yumao and Lin Qianpei.
