Moustiers, Important Oval Dish With Grotesque Decor, 18th Century

Beautiful oblong dish faience of Moustiers with a scalloped wing receiving a rich a rich decoration in green shades, made with copper green and manganese brown.
The iconography is made up of two grotesque figures situated on mounds with lush vegetation amidst fantastic insects.

The wing is hemmed with a green net underlined by two brown nets on which rest dreamlike flowers and plants as well as two mounds adorned with bulbs from which escape rich flowers and foliage spreading on the marli.

Seeming out of a dream, the grotesque decorations of Moustiers transcribe onto earthenware a fantasized world populated by burlesque characters and fantastic animals in the midst of an equally fantastical plant decor.
Here the two characters, one feminine dressed in an exotic outfit, crowned and seeming to sketch a dance, and the other masculine wearing a turban, leaning on a cane, present an oriental type. They evolve in the lush landscape typical of Moustiers, already present on the Chinese decor of the early 18th century, whose grotesques are an evolution.
