"Mathilde Arbey : Two-sided Painting "nude At The Edge Of The River" / "reading At The Show""Born in 1890, Mathilde Arbey is part of this generation of female painters who was finally recognized by their peers.
Admittedly, the fight was not always easy (it still is not), but her numerous shipments to the various salons of the capital, in particular that of French Artists where she obtained in 1913 the Honorable Mention, the Castelucho-Diana Prize in 1928 (superb self-portrait in the workshop that we sold in the past and which is now in a museum!) and the gold medal in 1930.
At the same time, she produced numerous illustrations for Camille Mauclair's books which reveal her talent of orientalist painter, from Tunis to Marrakech, from Rabat / Salé to Kerouan, as well as the opposite in Bruges !
The table that we offer you is a 33 X 1 cm panel, double-sided, presenting on one side a naked man sitting by the river, a parrot in his hand (stripes and lacks) and on the other "The reading in the Salon ”with a Lady reading a newspaper, her son sitting on a corner of the table by his side handling chess pieces (cracks)
The two sides bear the stamp of the signature.
