"Claude Mellan (1598-1688) King David"Claude Mellan (1598-1688) King David leaning on 1645, etching, 20x14cm, signed in the plate below right.
This etching was composed for the frontispiece of the work of the Reverend Father Nicolas Talon (1605-1691 ), Jesuit, entitled "L'Histoire Sainte, Les Roys, Tome Troisième", Paris, Sébastien and Gabriel Cramoisy, 1645. According to Father Talon's commentary, David sits, leaning on a tomb, immersed in deep meditation . Behind him, Solomon, standing, the scepter in hand and the crown on his head, in the flower of early childhood, looks up to the sky with eyes animated by confidence: the tomb on which David is leaning, present in its front side, a bas-relief, where we see Saul falling on the point of his sword, and Absalon, the son of David, pierced with arrows. We can read on the frieze: Quomodo ceciderunt forts? How did the valiant fell?
