Born in Ghent, Belgium, on December 21 of the year 1856, Georges Van der Straeten began studying law before embarking on sculpture. Paris, the capital of a thousand lights, is the dream of all foreign artists, especially Belgian artists, whom it irresistibly attracts. Georges Van der Straeten is no exception. In 1885, he moved to the 9th arrondissement and stayed in Paris for almost 30 years. Inspired by Art Nouveau and by Parisian frivolity and lightness, Georges Van der Straeten sculpts delicious young women, ingenuous or a bit wheeled, in busts, in natural or daring poses, always in a very refined style. The sculptor died in Ghent in 1928.
