John Opie "genre scene" period late 18th em Jonh Opie is an English painter of history and portraits, born in May 1761 in St Agnes in Cornwall and died in London in April 1807 Child prodigy, his career was launched by the political satirist Jonh Wolcot better known under the pseudonym Peter Pindar who introduced him to London in 1781 as "the wonder of Cornwall" His portraitist style is marked by a strong realism and striking contrasts of light and dark He was professor of painting at the Royal Academy in 1805 the painting is framed and protected by a curved glass dimensions 16.2 x 21.2 cm without frame 21.5 x 27.5 cm with frame
