Our painting is a superb portrait of the Pompadour said with the sheath after a work of François Hubert Drouais ( 1727-1775) Its author is undoubtedly a great artist when we consider with what quality it was painted

Madame de Pompadour

Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, Marquise de Pompadour, Duchess of Menars, born December 29, 1721 in Paris and died April 15 1764 in Versailles, Favorite of Louis XV Daughter of the farmer general François Poisson, she was married in 1741 to the financier Le Normant d'Étioles, from which she separated in 1745. Very beautiful, cultivated, gifted with artistic talents, she held a brilliant salon . Noticed by Louis XV, she became the titular mistress of the king (February 1745), was created Marquise de Pompadour, then duchess (1752) and lady of the queen's palace. Influential in politics, she dismissed or disgraced Orry (1745), Maurepas (1749), the count of Argenson and Machault d'Arnouville (1757) and supported Bernis, Soubise, Choiseul. She also played a role in the reversal of the alliances of 1756. Often attacked in pamphlets or songs (fishmongers), but acquired with philosophical ideas, she has the support of writers, whom she receives and protects: Quesnay, Marmontel , Montesquieu, Rousseau and especially Voltaire. Patron, she makes artists work (Gabriel, Boucher, Quentin de La Tour, Van Loo…) for her multiple residences, including the hotel in Évreux (now Élysée) and the castles of Celle-Saint-Cloud and Champs . She contributed to the founding of the Military School (1751) and the Sèvres factory (1756).
