Peter van den Velde (1634-1687)

Marine painter from 'Antwerp He became Master of the guild of Saint Luke in 1654. He married the daughter of the sculptor Sebastian de Neve. He was the Master of Adriaen van Blommen. The navies in the Netherlands and in Flanders Unknown in the Northern Netherlands throughout the 16th century, this style of painting developed during the 17th. The paintings depicting boats, ports and the sea in general then acquire great popularity, hence the important production that has come down to us, notably that painted by Peter van den Velde. This interest for the navies corresponds to the discovery of the Sea by the republic and to the development of navigation which followed.
