Exceptional double crochet Tshambwan, medium sepik, Latmul people, New Guinea. Double hook with ceremonial suspension in the shape of a moon,, two characters of man - bird carved with the representation of scarifications. The face of the oversized ancestral figure, entirely engraved with traditional curvilinear patterns has a straight and long nose, and the eyes, marked by auris shells while the mouth symbolically sticks out its tongue. The position of the hands presents sex as an offering and the second character seems to revel in it. These hooks are hung in the community house of men, they are linked to the initiation rites of young men. There are both offerings to ancestors and items important to the clan.
