French school late 18th century

This blond child with a soft blue look is dressed in the fashion of the end of the 18th century, a "sailor" suit with a ruffled shirt and a small blue jacket.

The colorful treatment of the background of the painting skillfully brings out the porcelain complexion of this young boy with a gentle look as well as the blondness of his hair. An effigy of a child which undeniably brings to mind those of Louis XVII (1785-1795), son of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette who died at the Temple prison.

This portrait of a child of fine drawing and painting quality is reminiscent of the portraits of children by Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805). It is to be compared to the work of Jeanne-Philiberte Ledoux (1767-1840) who was a pupil of Greuze and who never departed from the style of his master, so much so that a certain number of his works were attributed to JB Greuze.
