"Saint John The Baptist Preaching Accompanied By Sheep, Statue Of The Eighteenth Century"
Very beautiful statue of Saint John the Baptist in polychrome wood and gilded wood dating from the middle of the 18th century.
the saint is represented preaching, his mouth open, his hand holding the cross and the other holding the animal skin used for his coat.
it rests on a beautiful base in gilded wood.
At his feet is the sheep that accompanies him. the details are superb, the work of the drapery, of the saint's face, the sulphide eyes, the eyelashes, the open mouth, everything is finely treated and painted.
the sheep is very amusing, quite naive but it is very rare to meet it on a statue of the saint.
this statue looks great and the saint is very beautiful.
beautiful original polychrome despite some wear on the coat, very good condition, even the cross in gilded wood seems to be original. a very beautiful 18th century statue, a very beautiful and rare representation of Saint John the Baptist.
