Object description :

"Square Piano Of Renown Maison Erard From 1819"
No 10362 Purchased on March 11, 1819 by the Comtesse De Chavagnac.
The Chavagnac family is a family of French nobility, originally from Auvergne (Château de Chavagnac).

The first piano-forte built by Sébastien Érard dates from 1777. In the following years, he contributed to the development of the modern piano by filing numerous patents for inventions concerning its mechanism, particularly the double escapement system in 1821 which allowed to replay a note without waiting for the key to be fully raised, thus allowing a much faster repetition. Quickly, all grand pianos are equipped. He also invented the clip in 1808, still used today. Fixed to the frame, it allows precise guidance of the strings and determination of their vibrating length on the side of the ankles.

Érard also invented the 7-pedal harp with double movement in 1810, allowing you to play in all tones (diatonic harp) thanks to very sophisticated mechanics, allowing each string to be raised or lowered at will by a semitone.
Famous composers like Beethoven and Haydn have used “Érard” pianos as well as Queen Marie-Antoinette and pianist Franz Liszt.
