About the artist
Charles KVAPIL (1884-1957). He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, the city in which he exhibited his first works in 1908 at the eponymous Salon. He exhibited in Munich in 1911 works with a strong Cubist influence.
After the armistice he lived in Paris and set up his workshop in Montmartre. It was revealed to the Parisian public during the Salon des Indépendants in 1920. In 1923 it hung with Marcel Berheim, a Parisian gallery owner, and at Dalpayrat in Limoges.
Charles Kvapil is best known as a character painter, especially for his depictions of busty nudes. Still lifes, especially bouquets of flowers and landscapes constitute an important part of his work (landscapes of Corrèze, the Mediterranean coast, Corsica).
Works by Charles Kvapil are in public collections: Musée d'Art Moderne Paris / Musée d'Art Moderne Amsterdam / Musée des beaux-arts de Chambéry, Du Havre / Palais des beaux-arts de Lille
