Maurice Lévis or Levis, born in Paris on November 11, 1860 and died in 1940, is a French painter and watercolorist. Oil on cardboard representing a basin in Ostend, Belgium. Signed in memory of the artist. Signature Maurice Lévis (1860-1940). Maurice Lévis is a student of painters Henri Harpignies, Jules Lefebvre and Pierre Billet2. Through them, he was influenced by the Barbizon School, academic art and naturalism, then discovered the Pont-Aven3 region. He traveled to Africa and the Indian Ocean and painted works there that inserted him into the mainstream of Orientalism4. He was a member of the Société des artistes français from 1888, won an honorable mention in 1895, a third class medal in 1896 and a gold medal in 1927.
