"Sitting Buddha In Bhumisparsa Mùdra. Thailand, 2nd Half From 19th C., Lacquer, Bronze, Gold Leaf"
Sitting Buddha in lacquered and gilded bronze, in position of the gesture of the earth connection with witness (Bhumisparsa mùdra). This attitude represents the Awakening of Buddha. It holds a very great place in the Thai imagery, because it symbolizes the victory over Mâra (great god of desires, death and demons). This gesture appears to the Thai as the illustration of the greatest of miracles and represents the summit of the life of Buddha. Lacks the base; chips and missing gilding. Accident at the bottom right of the base. Rattanakosin style, Rama III era, 2nd quarter of the 19C.
