This watercolor drawing on paper is of rare delicacy. It represents a handsome young man of quality with his arm resting on the back of his chair. The background is barely sketched. The features are very delicate and the rendering of the face is particularly realistic. Work signed and dated lower right in pencil "Gaye 1854". Joseph Gaye is a miniature painter born in Tarbes on May 10, 1803 and died in Paris in 1862. Student of Aubry he exhibited at the Salon from 1831 to 1861 and was a medalist in 1837. There are miniatures of him in London in the Wallace collection , the portrait of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie. (Source Benezit). A note: tiny scratch on the edge of the drawing.
