"Very Large Bwa Butterfly Mask (burkina Faso)"This huge Bwa mask (42 X 171 X 28 cm! You had to be a balèze to wear it!) Comes, like many objects that I will present soon, from the succession of an old Pau collection. This great lover who lived and traveled all around the world had gathered on the four levels of his house objects from around the world to satisfy his insatiable curiosity ... The Bwa are an ethnic group from Burkina Faso, close to the Mossi and the Bobo, who created many masks associated with happy events or supposed to cause them like this mask called "butterfly" or "sparrowhawk" one of whose functions is to make young people in love! Carved in one piece in a relatively light wood, it is carved in relief from this head with the projecting horn / beak and framed by two zig-zag patterns in bas-relief, it carries a polychromy based on kaolin and d red ocher, the back is decorated with a two-color checkerboard. Longitudinal accidents due to woodworking have been repaired locally by a "seaming" of leather ties and the polychrome has wettings.
