Object description :

"Roman Gallo Sistone - The Wrestler - Sigillata - Gaul Ie III - N ° 1"
It is an archeological fragment of a piece of form made in Gaul between the 1st and 3rd century AD dimensions: 7 x 7 x 1,5 sigilled ceramic is a fine ceramic for service at table, used in Roman antiquity. It is characterized by a red varnish cooked in an oxidizing atmosphere. The decorations are embossed, molded, printed or reported. Some pieces are stamped, hence the name, sigillum from sigillum, the seal. After the conquest of Gaul by Caesar, the presence of many legions created a market, and led to the opening of factories. There were several major production centers: Lyon, Graufensenque (Aveyron) and Lezoux Auvergne (Arvernes territory). Our fragments come from an auction at Clermond Ferrand; They are probably from workshops in the Lezoux region. The italic and southern Gaulic sigillies were exported to Africa and Spain, where workshops were created.
