Object description :

"Portrait Of Sade Laure Holding A Carnation. Florentine School Of The XVIth Century"
Oil on canvas, presented in a renaissance frame in gilt wood with interlaced motifs. Dimensions with frame: 74 x 64 cm. The only canvas: 50 x 38 cm This rare portrait represents Laure de Sade, also known as Laure de Noves (1310-1348), daughter of Ermessande de Réal and the knight Audibert de Noves, and grandmother of the Marquis de Sade. There are other versions of this portrait and an engraving that next to the photos. She had just turned seventeen when the great poet Petrarch fell in love at first sight. On April 6, 1327, as she was leaving the church of the Convent of St. Clare in Avignon, she was seen and noticed by François Petrarch. From then on, Laure with white hands, became the chaste inspirer of the poet. Our painting is perfectly in keeping with the tradition of Renaissance portraits. With the development of the autonomous portrait, in the 15th century, the pose of profile in the frame of a window knows a general success, especially in the Italian courts. We can bring this portrait closer to the works of the painter Antonio d'Ubertino Verdi. Bright and piquant, Laure's face is represented in a humanistic atmosphere, with a particularly careful description of the decorative elements that mark the person represented belongs to a high social class: the hairstyle is carefully made with beaded pins and interlaced ribbons in the hair. The carmine red dress is elegantly fitted to the body by leather laces. A very important element "the carnation" that holds the young lady is the symbol of a future union, a marriage, an engagement. There are still many other female portraits in the carnation and I invite you to consult the following link: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Portraits_holding_carnation Bel state.
