Auguste Allongé (Paris 1833 – 1898 Bourron-Marlotte):The Forest
203 x 141 mm, 8 x 5½in.
Signed and dated lower left:Allongé/ 1886

A painter and an engraver, Allongé was above all a marvellous draftsman who excelled in charcoal and watercolour. In 1875, he wrote a treaty on the technique of charcoal that enjoyed a great success and secured his reputation. His drawings are characterised by intense compositions full of trees, leaves, rocks, streams, and cloudy skies. The light is always described with accuracy and sensitivity. Despite its modest size, the present watercolour has all the characteristics of Allongé’s art: realism, light, and the feeling of exploring the artist’s beloved forest.
