Chapu’s drawings are mainly at the Musée du Louvre, the Musée Municipal of Melun and the Musée Henri Chapu at Méé-sur-Seine. The artist drew multiple times the same theme. Thus, the pose of the mother and child of our drawing can be found in several sketches of the Musée du Louvre. Chapu also used the motif in 1872 for his famous sculptureSecurity, presented at theUniversal Exhibition of 1878[4]. Finally, the child alone was used for a sculpture entitledMoïsenow at the Musée d’Orsay. The verso of our sheet representsTheseus killing Minotaur. This red chalk study can be compared stylistically to a mythological scene of the Musée du Louvre, and by the theme to a sketch drawn on a page of a sketchbook of the Musée du Louvre.
