Jean-Baptiste Lallemand executed one hundred and forty drawings from different sites across France to illustrate the bookDescription générale et particulière de la France, published in twelve volumes from 1781 to 1796. The present drawingView of the Théatre de l’Odéonis reproduced in the first part of the volume dedicated to Paris. The illustration is entitledVue du Théâtre Françaisbecause it was the first theatre to host the Théâtre-Français company at its opening in 1782. Lallemand also drew other views of Parisian theatres to illustrate the same volume: the Théâtre des Italiens, the Théâtre des Variétés, and the Opera.
