Signed in pen and brown ink lower right:Sallieth.

Mattheus de Sallieth was first known as an engraver. He trained under Johann Ernst Mansfeld, stayed in Vienna, and then moved to Paris where he improved his skills with Jacques-Philippe Le Bas. In 1778, Sallieth settled in Rotterdam where he made numerous engravings: views of Dutch harbors, sailors, portraits, figures of street vendors and even allegorical scenes.Our study is the only drawing we have found by Mattheus de Sallieth. Executed in black chalk, it represents a young boy sitting with a dreamy expression and a casual posture.
