We are proud to offer this jewel (signed and dated) by Johann Heinrich Schönfeld, one of the most eminent German painters of the Baroque period, which represents a fascinating episode on the life of Alessandro Magno, based on the history of Plutarch.
In particular, in the center of a spectacular architecture populated with many characters, emerges the figure of Alexander the Great, visiting the Achilles' tomb surmounted by an obelisk. German artist of noble origin, Schönfeld has long spent his career in Italy.
He was first in Rome, under the patronage of Prince Orsini, influenced by the classicist trends Nicolas Poussin, then in Naples, where he made his reinterpretation of the luminism of the matrix of Caravaggio. The years in Italy have matured in him the passion for the historical themes related to classical mythology, which he would have maintained throughout his career.
His compositions are articulated in wide and often open spaces, with a theatrical imprint, where the plays of the characters play an important role in the transmission of the narrative meaning.
Our painting is distinguished by virtuosity and modernity in the study of colors, where light and delicate tones, vibrant features and a strong direct light make the figures evanescent, almost vibrant.
Painter, little known, given the rarity of works on the antique market, Schönfeld has a significant presence with his paintings in international museums;
