"Portrait Of A Man Of Law, Attributed To André Bouys 1656-1740"
Oil on canvas Framed with a gilded wooden bag with pearls (18th century) Total dimensions: 80 x 64 cm This portrait executed around 1695, represents a young man dressed in a black coat with a white flap, he wears a long wig called "Leonine" very fashionable at that time. It is a character of the so-called nobility of dress. The nobility of dress appears in the sixteenth century with the development of the royal administration and its extension to the whole kingdom after the disappearance of the major territorial principalities. The nobility of dress was made up of bourgeois ennobled through the offices or offices they had exercised after having bought them from the king. These functions were generally performed in the judiciary, hence the term "nobility of dress". These functions had become hereditary at the beginning of the 17th century by means of a tax paid to the king. We are here in the presence of a control panel that the painter has done particularly well, realizing his model with a remarkable facial expression with delicate complexions. André Bouys (Hyères, 1656- Paris, 1740) Provençal arrived at an unknown date in Paris, yes seems to have been a student of Jean-François de Troy. He was especially portraitist, but his works are better known by engraving, while his name is nowadays mainly associated with still lifes representing snacks. On the 26th of April, 1687, he made himself accredited to the academy on the presentation of portraits, and was commissioned to paint for his reception the features of Charles de la Fosse, of which he was also a pupil, and Etienne Le Hongre. If he brought the first portrait (Versailles, castle) as early as November 27, he delayed so much for the second that he was repeatedly called to order by the company.
