"Amphora Cult Of Dionysus Terracotta H 90 Cm. 20th Century"We present this antique Greek style amphora of the 20th century terracotta 90 cm high.
The base is ebonized wood, the foot lifts inward to support the belly, divided by a braid of black rope.
The belly is very elongated up and alternates with geometric figures that serve as an introduction to the scenes of the "cult of Dionysus" with faunas carrying amphoras wine and maenads playing and dancing: Dionysus is one of the gods most fascinating and contradictory Greek mythology.
In a general way, it represents the irrepressible energy of nature from its awakening, this vital and instinctive force that accompanies the fruits to maturity and, as such, is considered a beneficial deity, on which depend the gifts of nature.
The faithful of Dionysus, the fauns and especially the women of ancient Greece were in communion with the god, a communion that took place in the wildest mountain regions. They entered the dimension of emotions and irrationality while dancing, driven by the irresistible force of an extremely lively music possessed by God.
At the top of the scenes, the floral motifs give a sense of celebration.
The part of the neck (representing a common mortal as opposed to the festive scene) is a whole with handles in a straight line rising above the edge of the amphora.
In conclusion: a large amphora, well done in ancient Greek style, very original.
