Ife Head - 12th To 17th Century (thermoluminescence Test) flag

Object description :

"Ife Head - 12th To 17th Century (thermoluminescence Test)"
This head of Ife (Nigeria) in terracotta is probably the portrait of an "ooni" (king) with a serene face. The detail of the vertical streaks represents traditional scarifications or the beaded veils that hid the faces of the rulers.
This sculpture has a thermoluminescence test dating the artwork from the 12th century to 17th century at the latest.
The remarkably realistic and delicate rendering of Ife's medieval sculptures is exceptional in the art of sub-Saharan Africa. The city of Ife is considered by the Yoruba people as the place where the deities created humanity and as such is a sacred place.
The sculpture is sold with its base.
