Object description :

"Mahogany "
This very beautiful nightstand also called Somno is 1st Empire period. This cylindrical Somno with grooves is mahogany and mahogany veneer, it opens with a leaf revealing the interior space and a shelf. The top is a white marble framed mahogany, as far as the base is concerned it is an octagonal plinth. One can notice a restoration on the frame of the marble. Created under the Consulate - in the first years of the reign of Napoleon I - the somno or somneau is presented as a small piece of furniture in the shape of a cylindrical or square table, composed of a closed part which offers a storage space. It is placed in the bedroom, often beside the bed to serve as a bedside table. It is under the Empire that this table takes the name of "somno", of the Latin somnus which means "sleep".
