"Old Chelaberd rug, Caucasus, 113 cm x 203 cm, Karabakh area, early 20th century"
Extraordinary carpet KAZAK TJELABERD or CHELABERD (village of Chelaberd) said "KAZAK AUX AIGLES" from the Caucasus near the Karabakh region and close from Georgia, in wool on wool, early twentieth century, for my taste one of the most beautiful type of Kazakh, This model has the most common colors of Kazak named CHELABERD, TJELABERD or TCHALABERT, but they are not less Attractive and strong, the most regularly used colors are red, blue and white, but there are carpets of this kind, color, brown, red and gray, orange and also many variations of blue.
The unusual color patterns are probably part of the older group of this kind and it would seem that the simpler and more sparse patterns would be a factor of great antiquity.
These carpets are called "KAZAK AUX AIGLES", "KAZAK ADLER" (eagle in German), "KAZAK with the coat of arms", but still, "KAZAK with swords", the drawings are typical of this kind, and therefore very recognizable in the many Caucasian and Armenian carpet decorations.
It is impossible to confuse them.
The English call them Sunburst Kazakh, blazing sun.
Some see it as an eagle, an interlocking saber, or an old coat of arms that reminds us of the two-headed eagle of the old nobiliary armorial bearings of the old Russian and German empires, which is why they are named Kazak Adler.
The SEYCHOUR carpets also present a very sophisticated, typical bird-like decor, yet their geographical location of production is much further to the Caspian Sea. In the field of this piece, we find three great eagles, blue, red and brown on a white background, this motif makes us think of large crosses, which brings the more than probable thesis of the emancipation of the motif of the cross under all its forms for centuries by the Armenian Christian population that was present throughout the Caucasus.
The main border decorated with stylized flowers having the same pattern as stars of médes, alternates red and blue and is bordered by a line of "médahil" blue A wonderful old carpet, having little wear, we We are in front of a very beautiful testimony of these regions and a secular and ancestral know-how.
You will be able to appreciate in the pictures two other Chelaberd carpets, older and more rare.
