"Philippe Tanneur - Boat In The Storm"Philippe TANNEUR Marseille, 1795 - Marseille, 1878 Oil on canvas 44 x 61 cm Signed and dated "Tanneur / 1841" A marine painter from Marseille, Philippe Tanneur is one of the great mariners of the mid-nineteenth century with Louis Garneray, Eugene Isabey and Theodore Gudin. Pupil of Horace Vernet (1789-1863), Philippe Tanneur was first moss then corsair before becoming official painter of marine. He was appointed by Charles X in 1829 to join the expeditionary force of Algiers to paint the landing of the troops. In the 1830s, he was a teacher at the Imperial School of St. Petersburg where he included Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky as a student. Our painting dated 1841 recalls the beautiful sinking scene of the Museum of Fine Arts in Brest painted in 1850.
