Elizabeth of Hungary lived from 1211 to 1228 at the Castle of Wartburg with her husband landgrave Louis IV of Thuringia and their three children but also his mother-in-law the imperious Sophie. German Franciscans make her discover the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi and she decides to give up a life of luxury and frivolity to serve the poor. Her husband died of the plague in 1227 but she refused to remarry. From now on she devotes all her life and money to the poor for whom she builds a hospital. Elizabeth dons the habit of the Third Order Franciscan and takes for spiritual director Conrad of Marburg. Died in 1231, his remains were exhumed in 1232. Canonized as early as 1235, his birthday is set for 17 November. The Teutonic Order had a magnificent Gothic church built to receive its relics. These attracted numerous crowds making Marburg a great center of pilgrimage of the Christian West.
