"Pair (2) Of Portraits - Edmund Lloyd (1796-1855) And Catherine Lloyd (1808-1878) C. 1833/43"
These works descended, from the sitters, through the Lloyd family for almost 180 years until 2019

These exquisite portraits depict Edmund Lloyd and his wife Catherine (nee Hume). Highly attractive, as much attention is paid to the facial features as is the excellent treatment of the attire; Catherine’s evening dress is defined with lightness and dexterity. The elegantly draped tartan sash is a tribute to her Scottish heritage (the Hume surname derives from Hume Castle, Berwickshire, and its adjacent estates). These elegant portraits are the epitome of the post Regency British portrait.

Edmund Lloyd was born on 15 April 1796 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, the son of Ann Vokins (c.1760-1818) and Samuel Andrews Lloyd (1757-?) who were both Quakers. Samuel and Ann married in April 1779 at the Quaker Meeting House in Newbury. Both Samuel Lloyd and Ann Vokins were from wealthy families; before the marriage Samuel had signed a contract covenanting the sum of £30,000 to be divided amongst any future children should he die after his wife. Presumably this was to ensure that the money she was bringing to the marriage would be passed to her children.

Samuel Andrews Lloyd died in Newbury in 1822 on 28th February. His death was recorded in the records of the monthly meeting of the Quakers of Reading and Warborough. The record says he was about 65 years of age and a gentleman. According to the Quaker records for Berkshire Ann Lloyd died in Newbury on the 30th day of March 1818.

Edmund married Catherine Elizabeth Hume on 23 May 1833 at Old Church, St Pancras, London and later settled in Thornbury and it is likely that our portraits were painted to celebrate this occasion (the style of the hair and the clothing support this also). Catherine Elizabeth Hume was born on 23 May 1808 in London, the fourth daughter of Catherine Elizabeth (nee Gwennap) (1770-1847) and Joseph Hume (1756-1846). Joseph Hume was a well-known commercial chemist in London and a member of most of the Learned Societies of Europe. He was well known as a discoverer of an improved method of detecting arsenic or ‘Hume’s test’ which was used by toxicologists.

Edmund and Catherine had 11 children:-

A son Henry Hume (1834-1904) in Thornbury, Gloucestershire
A son Edward Harford (1836-1908) in Thornbury, Gloucestershire
A daughter Catherine Jane (1838-1842) in Thornbury, Gloucestershire
A daughter Alice Anne Esmeade (1839-1901) in Thornbury, Gloucestershire
A son Rodney Maclaine (born 3 July 1841) in Thornbury, Gloucestershire
A son Edmund (or Edward) Walter (1843-1856) in Thornbury, Gloucestershire
A son Edward Walter (born 26 July 1843)
A son Graham Moore (1846-1898) in Thornbury, Gloucestershire
A daughter Florence Kathleen (1848-1921) in Thornbury, Gloucestershire
A son Charles Harford (born 16 October 1849) in Thornbury, Gloucestershire

In 1819 Edmund became a solicitor. Trade Directories show that Edmund was Clerk to the County Clerk as well as being an Attorney. He died on 4 June 1855 in Thornbury, Gloucestershire, when he was 59 years old. On 9th June 1855 the Bristol Mercury reported the death of Edmund explaining that whilst he was on business in Bristol he visited a dentist in Clifton for a filling but after the treatment he collapsed and died.

Catherine Lloyd died on 9 February 1878 in Thornbury, Gloucestershire.

Held in the original good quality and condition gilded frames.

Thomas George was reportedly born at Fishguard, Pembrokeshire around 1790. He lived in that region up to 1826 when he moved to London. Exhibited five portraits at the Royal Academy from 1829 to 1838 and at the British Institute in 1830. In 1829 he resided at 10 Howland Street and in 1837 at 15 Percy Street. He died in Madeira, Spain. Examples of his work are in the National Museum of Wales and the V&A London.
