Object description :

"Compendium Of Surveying By Thomas Haye, Circa 1710"
Interesting and unusual small Thomas Haye compendium consisting of a compass of surveying and a geometric or astronomical quadrant. We can date the instrument of the years 1700-1710. Both instruments are mounted or engraved on a square brass plate measuring 12 × 12 cm. The plate is supported by a ball joint and can be mounted on both sides with three removable decorative screws. The compass is beautifully engraved with the cardinal points and has a silver circle of 280 degrees. Around the compass two fixed pinnules allow to make sightings. The geometric quadrant is engraved with a quarter circle from 0 ° to 90 °. At the center of the quarter circle is a hole for supporting a string and a plumb bob (not present). In addition, along the lower part forming a right angle is engraved a shadow square numbered from 0 to 100 and then from 100 to 0, each division being divided into 10. This quadrant was used to measure the altitude of the sun or the altitude of the stars or even for simple inclination measurements. The square of the shadows allowed him to measure the linear height of an object. The fabrications of Thomas Haye, active in Paris between 1690 and 1720, are uncommon but of high quality. It is best known for gnomonic instruments, sundials or surveying instruments. He has written a book on the manufacture of sundials (of which we have a good copy for sale: https://www.book-rare-book.com/book/21037598/YEG-459/en). The wooden base is modern and the lower part of the patella too. Beautiful and rare instrument, beautiful bill.
