Frame: height 32 cm x length 37 cm. His father was a furniture manufacturer at a time when cabinetmaking was considered an art. After short studies at the college of imperial Bonaparte high school, Hippolyte Bellangé is placed in a business house, then at the age of 16 enters the studio of the famous painter Antoine-Jean Gros. Among his classmates are Bonington, Lami, Roqueplan, Delaroche ... He is linked to a lasting friendship with Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet, both of whom are enthusiastic about Géricault's work. Bellangé begins with drawings, watercolors, sepia. Under the influence of Charlet, he turned to lithography, a technique still new and deemed attractive. From 1823 to 1835, he published in Gihaut fifteen lithographic albums devoted to military and patriotic subjects that attracted the popular favor. However, his taste carries him more and more towards military painting. He exhibited at the Salon of 1822 with the Battle of the Moskowa and three small scenes of countryside (A halt, Bivouac, wagon of wounded). He was noticed at the Salon of 1824 where he obtained a second class medal. The official consecration arrived ten years later with Napoleon returning from the Island of Elba (Salon of 1834), which earned him the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor. The success is huge. The work is engraved and lithographed by Bellangé himself. It is followed by large paintings that have seated his reputation as a military painter: Battle of Fleurus (Salon of 1835), Wagram (Salon of 1837), Friedland (1838), Altenkirchen (1839), Attack of Téniah de Mouzaia (war of Africa, 1841), Combat before Corunna (1843), Watch of the Battle of Moskowa (1846). With Charlet and Raffet, he will become "one of the three artists who best hear the reproduction of the Empire's herdsmen" (V. Thoré). It also presents scenes of genre related to the military life, as the Mistress-woman (1838) and Departure of the cantonment (1855), in which the humor or the humor show.
