Dimensions in engraving view, 41 5 x 25.5 cm.The Mandragore, rich in alkaloids with hallucinogenic properties, is surrounded by many legends, the ancients attributing to it extraordinary magic virtues.
The engraving comes from the Dutch translation of the work of Augustin Calmet, Historical Dictionary, Cretic, Chronological, Geographical and Literal, Lyon, 1722. Augustin Calmet was a Benedictine monk, abbot of Senones. The work in Dutch translation was published in Leyden by Samuel Luchtman in 1725.
