Basilius (or Basil) Besler, is a doctor, botanist and publisher Alemand, born on February 13, 1561 in Nuremberg and died on March 13, 1629 in that same city. He published the catalog of his garden in the Hortus Eystettensis in 1613. The collection contains 367 engravings on copper. The engravings were executed by more than six different engravers, the most important being Wolfgang Kilian. The Hortus Eystettensis is a codex produced by Basilius Besler in 1613 of the Garden of the Bishop of Eichstatt in Bavaria. The Bishop, Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, commissioned Besler to produce the work, which he compiled over sixteen years, the bishop died before its completion. Besler had the assistance of his brother and a group of skilled German draughtsmen and engravers, including Sebastian Schedel, an accomplished painter, and Wolfgang Kilian, a skilled engraver from Augsburg.
