The Triumph of Galatea
oil on canvas
Dimensions (cm): 78 x 97
with frame 93 x 112
Provenance: Rome, private collection
The painting shows the apotheosis of the nymph Galatea, who rides a shell-shaped carriage, an episode borrowed from the ancient Latin culture and taken up again at the time of the Renaissance; especially the inspired myths are told in the Giostra di Poliziano, where the passage of Galatea with his nymphs is described before Polyphemus and in Ovid's Metamorphoses.
Various nymphs surround the nymph, including the Nereids, gods of the sea with their hair adorned with pearls and corals, and the Tritons.
A pair of loves watches the scene of the sky supporting a sheet swollen by the wind, while another child, Palemone, holds the reins of the car. Sitting watching the scene in the distance the cyclops Polyphemus lover of Galatea but unpaid, and plays the flute in honor of his beloved, whose figure serves prefiguring the tragic episode told by Ovid.
The painting should be attributed to the circle of the painter Noël Nicolas Coypel, classical painter, heir to a dynasty of painters, famous for his mythological compositions, capable of infusing in his works a luministic of yield and remarkable color, combined in a way Elegant image.
The brilliant interpretation of seafaring mythology Coypel recalls the effects that the artist has perfected during his career in his masterpieces, including the birth of Venus (St. Petersburg, Hermitage Museum) and the kidnapping of Europe (Philadelphia, Museum of Art).
Rare are the works of quality attributable to the painter on the art market: very similar to our painting, representing the birth of Venus, it was presented in London by Soteby from the auction of 09/07/2015, and which we indicate the reference: http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/lot.212.html/2015/old-master-british-paintings-day-sa ...
