"Italian Rosso Antico Column. Souvenir Of The Grand Tour. Rome Early 19th Century."
A large Rosso Antico column topped with a patinated bronze bust representing a goddess. This column is inspired by the column of Marcus Aurelius in Rome, and has on its four sides Latin inscriptions celebrating the victories of the emperor over the Macromannic Germans and the Sarmatians established north of the Danube. Another inscription relates that Pope Sixtus V rendered his original beauty to this column dedicated to the Emperor Antoninus while she was in a state of very advanced ruin, the year 1589 and the fourth year of his pontificate. Rome early nineteenth century. Souvenir of the Grand Tour. Very good condition (some chips on the marble). Height: 55 cm X Width: 10 cm X Depth: 10 cm
