Object description :

"Tempera On Canvas Signed Lytton, 1942"
Romantic Ballet, 1942, painted and signed by Neville Bulwer-Lytton, grandson of the famous writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Trained in England and France in the best institutions, he exhibited his entire life in prestigious galleries and frequented the artistic and cultural circles of London and Paris. On the back of this work, a label indicates that this painting was exhibited as part of the Tempera Society, a society of painters exhibiting in the most popular galleries of the English capital. A mention indicates that the painting was rented to "Mrs Noel Baker", the wife of Philipp Noel Baker, politician, British athlete and Nobel Peace Prize in 1959. No doubt that Irene Noel Baker - close friend of Virginia Woolf - frequented the same circles as Neville, which allowed her to appreciate the work of this painter who was almost her neighbor. On this late work by Neville Bulwer-Lytton we will appreciate the almost impressionist work that seems to refer to the work of the painter Edgar Degas. Research file available upon request.
