Drawing of a dancer by Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931). Signed "f" at the bottom right. French painter, illustrator and engraver, Louis-Henri Forain dit Jean-Louis, studied drawing alongside Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux and André Gill, then at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, he studied with Jean-Léon Gérôme. A friend of Verlaine, he lives with Rimbaud, frequents Parisian literary salons and becomes one of the close friends of Degas and Manet. He participated in many exhibitions with the Impressionists between 1879 and 1886. He is also illustrator for many newspapers such as Modern Life, The Parisian World, The Republic of Letters, etc. The Opera and its dancers is one of his favorite themes.
