"William Baptiste Baird: Oil On Cardboard "on The Seine" 1914"
Oil on cardboard from the American painter William Baptiste Baird (1847-1917), representing the banks of the Seine. Animated landscape with men, horses, barges, and city in background at sunset. William Baptiste Baird, originally from Chicago, was a pupil of Adolphe Yvon (1817-1893) and painter of the Barbizon school. First specialized in the painting of rural subjects and in particular farm animals, he then executes often animated landscapes, especially in the forest of Fontainebleau, Barbizon. Signed lower left: W BAIRD (signature slightly erased), dated and located on the reverse: "anno 1914", "ON THE SEINE, Paris", "W. Baird 18 deadlock of Maine". Dimensions: 33 x 22 cm. Condition: good general condition, small scratches of use, small gaps of paint in edge, the corners are slightly chipped, a lack of painting in bottom left on the level of a cart that pulls a horse.
