Object description :

"André Charigny (1902-2000) "still Life With Apple Tray" Besançon, Fernier, Franc Comtois,"
Very beautiful and large oil / canvas of Andrè Charigny titled on the back on an old label of the painter "still life with the tray of red apples" signed upper right. Format without frame 46x55cm. It is indeed a superb composition by this great and excellent painter Franc Comtois; as usual, he heals his subject thanks to a perfect design and a very subtle palette, quite influenced by Flemish and Dutch painting, but also by cubists, in short a clever mix of all this rendered by Charigny. At school, the young André, son of colored merchants, is passionate about drawing. Living in the 17th arrondissement rue Balagny, rue Guy-Môquet since 1945, he cultivates this talent at the municipal school of applied arts of boys Bernard Palissy with Professor Alexandre Lavalley (1862-1927), painting 1891 Prix de Rome . In June 1916, he won a first prize for drawing at the drawing competitions of schools in the city of Paris. From 1916, for health reasons, the teen spends several years in Normandy, in the Eure, where he discovers the wonder of nature. In 1920, he was admitted to the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. Charigny installs his studio at 144 avenue Emile Zola, in the 15th arrondissement and remains five years at the school on rue Malaquais. In 1924, his elder painter Robert Fernier (1895-1977), founder of the Courbet Museum in Ornans, invited him to discover his Jura, the one painted by their predecessor Gustave Courbet. In Pontarlier, where he exhibited the same year, Charigny met the painter from the Comtois d'adoption André Roz (1897-1946), with whom he participated in the founding of the Salon des Annonciades in Pontarlier in 1927, a salon to which he remained faithful all his life. Charigny also exhibited at the Salon des artistes français where he received an honorable mention in 1927 and a bronze medal the following year1, obtaining the Leclerc-Maria-Bouland Prize in 1928, the silver medal in 1930 and the gold medal in 1931. He also won the Rosa Bonheur Prize. At the Salon of 1934, three travel grants were awarded to three painters: Lucien Fontanarosa, Paul Girol and Charigny for a Market Scene. At the 1940 Salon, Charigny won the Paul Chabas Prize. In 1947, he became a member of the jury of this national fair, a year after his admirer Pierre Jouffroy, painter then established in Montbéliard. In 1945, he married Antoinette Maître and, four years later, the couple settled permanently rue Mégevand in Besançon. Every summer, his faithful friend Pierre Bichet (1922-2008), painter of the snow and operator of the volcanologist Haroun Tazieff, invites him to share his Jura workshop, road barns to Pontarlier. In 1945, studying at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, Bichet had built in the former Parisian studio Charigny.Après the death of his wife in 1977, André Charigny will remain faithful to his address in Besançon. In July-August 1982, the Salon des Annonciades dedicates an important retrospective of the works of Charigny, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. From June to October 1989, the young Museum of Pontarlier, founded in 1982, exhibits Charigny which is part of the permanent collections alongside Courbet, Fernier, Roz, Bichet. The one who has successfully painted scenes of life, landscapes and still lifes dies in the year 2000, 98 years old. From September 28 to November 17, 2002, on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the painter, a vast retrospective is organized at the Chapelle des Annonciades in Pontarlier. This canvas is in perfect condition, delivered in a period canvas frame. Authentic guarantee
