"Japanese Silk Damask Silk Damask Dress Tessier - France - Circa 18"
Circa 1895/1905 France Two-part wedding dress (?), Skirt and bodice, Japanese style dating from the Belle Epoque. High-waisted, high-waisted corsage with a woven waistband indicating Mademoiselle Tessier St Etienne. Cream satin bottom finely pleated with straw yellow silk crepe on the bust. Eloquent work of drapery, knotted and bubbled, in straw-yellow crepe on the long sleeves ending with a cream-colored cotton lace ruffle. Rich plastron emphasizing the silhouette, consisting of three legs in satin embroidered with white, gold and silver sequins. Festoons of faceted steel beads and lace at the edges. Small pouf skirt in straw yellow silk damask decorated with waving stems of cherry blossoms in button. A wide straw-yellow satin ribbon tightens the waist and accentuates the S-line of this refined girl ensemble. Very good state of color and conservation. Size: Equivalent size 34 France. Excerpt from the catalog of the exhibition Falbalas, Portraits and Fashion in the Female 1850-1930 - Museum of Art of the City of Toulon - 2017: The wedding dresses were often colored in France in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. In Provence in particular, the tones chosen in the popular layers are dark: generally dark green or green-yellow. The bride uses a Sunday dress with a beautiful scarf, headdress, apron, and family jewels, necessarily out of the ordinary. The materials used are taffeta and silks shaped, even woolen or Siamese, false bristles, poppy or poplin including Arles. Provencal wedding dresses can be colored flea, goose poop, chimney sweeper, aubergine, garnet or green Empire. The light, white or cream wedding dresses correspond to a high social rank and do not really appear until the beginning of the 19th century. The immaculate, white dress, will not be generalized in France in the popular classes until the twentieth century with the progress of the confection. Excellent condition except the bottom of the strapless bustier flares slightly flared but maintained by the embroidery applied. This defect is noticeable with very sustained attention. Otherwise perfect structure .... Silk and crepe chiffon in very good condition, which is not often the case!
